Russian Military Assaults on Donetsk Region, March 8, 2023
According to UATV: On March 8, 2023, Russian forces launched attacks against ten settlements in Ukraine's Donetsk region over a 24-hour period, resulting in substantial destruction and civilian casualties. The strikes targeted cities including Druzhkivka, Kramatorsk, Mykolaivka, Sviatohirsk, and Sloviansk, where critical infrastructure sustained severe damage. This assault is part of a broader pattern of intensified attacks on the region, a focal point of the ongoing war.
The shelling destroyed dozens of private homes and apartment buildings. Across the region, 122 civilian objects were damaged, 45 of which were residential buildings. In Kramatorsk, Russian forces dropped a KAB-500 aerial bomb and conducted attacks using drones and artillery, wounding ten people, including three children. Damage in Kramatorsk included:
- 32 apartment buildings
- two administrative buildings
- seven shops
- five educational institutions
- 37 vehicles
On Sviatohirsk, nine KAB-250 bombs were dropped, destroying:
- four private houses
- six apartment buildings
- an administrative building
- six retail pavilions
- an educational institution
- non-residential premises
In Druzhkivka, drone attacks damaged two houses and a civilian car. In Sloviansk, a strike by a 'Molniya-2' UAV destroyed a private home. Drones damaged a non-residential building and a cargo truck in Mykolaivka. In the village of Nykonorivka, one man was killed and a vehicle was damaged due to hostile fire.
Conflict Escalation and Threat to Civilians
In a further escalation, Russian troops attacked Ukraine with two 'Iskander-M' ballistic missiles and 117 attack drones, with impacts recorded at 11 locations. These events underscore the continued aggression against Ukrainian territory and the persistent danger to civilians.
These bombardments highlight the intensification of the conflict in the region and the constant peril faced by the civilian population. The targeting of infrastructure and residential buildings emphasizes the urgent need for continued international support for Ukraine and points to the severe humanitarian consequences of the war.
