Over Two Days, Russian Forces Strike Seven Ukrainian Regions: Consequences and New Security Pledges.
Attacks on Ukraine, January 17-18
According to UATV: On January 17 and 18, Russian military forces launched attacks across multiple Ukrainian regions, targeting civilian infrastructure and residential buildings. These strikes resulted in casualties and significant damage. In Zaporizhzhia, for instance, three people were wounded and a fire broke out. The attacks also impacted the Odesa region, damaging infrastructure, and struck social infrastructure in Kherson.
Scale of the Attacks and International Response
Reports indicate that over these two days, the Russian army targeted the Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Odesa, and Kherson regions. The assaults involved:
- 316 attack drones
- 402 guided aerial bombs
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine's energy system cannot cover one-third of the electricity demand, highlighting the severe challenges the country faces. This relentless bombardment is part of a wider Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure, especially during winter.
The situation is further compounded by new threats, as Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported that one civilian was killed and another was wounded and hospitalized.
"The Energy Ramstein is a platform for discussing the continued supply of missiles for air defense." - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Amid these events, Norway announced a $200 million support package for Ukraine to purchase gas and energy equipment, a potential critical step in overcoming the energy crisis. The Ukrainian delegation continues to work on the peace process and securing security guarantees, striving to ensure stability and protection for its population amid escalating aggression.
These attacks underscore the persistent threats Ukraine faces in the ongoing war and the severe strain on its energy sector. The growing need for international support, particularly military and humanitarian aid, is increasingly urgent as the country works to preserve its energy independence and ensure the safety of its citizens. Norway and other allies can play a key role in strengthening Ukraine's energy stability during this difficult period.
