Russian Forces Target Civilian Utility Workers
According to TSN.ua: On January 30, a Russian drone strike hit a vehicle carrying utility workers near Sloviansk, killing one employee. The attack occurred as workers from the 'Water of Donbas' Company were returning from a repair site. The strike was carried out by a Russian drone using a fiber-optic guidance system.
Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, confirmed the attack. The deceased was a locksmith in the emergency repair brigade of the company, which is the sole water supplier for the Donetsk region. He is survived by his wife and two adult children. This attack is part of a broader pattern of targeting civilian infrastructure, which is a violation of international humanitarian law.
Ongoing Peril for Essential Service Personnel
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, more than ten employees of the 'Water of Donbas' Company have been killed due to Russian shelling. Ihor Novak, a company representative, stated that its employees continue to perform their duties despite the danger and attacks by Russian drones.
“Despite the danger and attacks by Russian drones, our workers go out to work and make repairs,” emphasized Ihor Novak.
This incident underscores the extreme danger faced by utility workers in a warzone and the critical importance of their work for sustaining the civilian population. Despite the risks, these workers remain dedicated to their tasks, highlighting their commitment and the vital need to maintain water supply for communities caught in the conflict.
