Russian Strikes Target Odesa Region's Power Grid, Damaging DTEK Facility.
Energy Infrastructure Under Attack
According to Novyny.live: Russian forces struck the energy infrastructure of the Odesa region overnight on February 22, causing significant damage to a facility operated by DTEK 'Odeski Electromerezhi'. The scale of the damage is substantial, and restoring power will require considerable time. These attacks are part of a wider Russian campaign to degrade Ukraine's civilian infrastructure.
The situation with electricity in Odesa remains difficult. Russia also targeted the city's energy infrastructure on the night of February 21. Following an earlier attack on February 17, utility workers managed to restore power to 47,300 households, but currently, over 57,100 customers remain without electricity. In one district, a single strike left 99,000 people without power.
Emergency Response Efforts
Rescue workers continue efforts to mitigate the effects of the attacks. They have already extinguished all fires, and no casualties have been reported. The situation is under control, but restoring the damaged energy infrastructure will require a significant effort.
These assaults on the power grid underscore the persistent threats to Ukraine's civilian population during the ongoing war. Damage to electrical networks creates severe hardships, especially in winter when reliable heating and power are critical. Full restoration of electricity could take a long time, further complicating life for affected communities. The work of rescue teams and energy technicians in dealing with the aftermath is vital for maintaining stability in the region.
