Russian Strike Targets Volyn Energy Facility: Impact on Novovolynsk.
Novovolynsk Responds to Russian Attack on Critical Infrastructure
According to Novyny.live: On February 9, Russian forces launched an attack targeting an energy facility in the Novovolynsk community of Ukraine's Volyn region. The city's mayor, Borys Karpus, stated that the situation is currently under control. This strike is part of a wider Russian campaign against Ukrainian energy infrastructure, which has intensified during the winter months.
In the aftermath of the strike, two secondary schools in Novovolynsk, specifically Lyceums No. 2 and No. 7, have shifted to remote learning. Furthermore, Kindergartens No. 6 and No. 7 are not accepting children due to the attack. Mayor Karpus reported that the city's water supply is functioning via the electrical grid, while sewage treatment plants are operating on backup generators. Heating is being maintained at some boiler houses that have switched to generators, with fuel supplies currently available.
Regional Context of the Attacks
It is important to note that on the same day, Russian forces also attacked the town of Shakhtarske in the Dnipropetrovsk region, injuring nine people. An attack was also recorded in the Kharkiv region, where a woman and a child were killed as a result of drone strikes. The situation in Novovolynsk remains manageable for now, but educational institutions are being forced to adapt to new realities.
The assault on the Novovolynsk energy site reflects a broader Russian strategy aimed at destabilizing Ukraine's power grid, with severe potential consequences for civilians. The disruption to schooling and childcare services underscores how the civilian population continues to bear the brunt of the ongoing conflict. Regional tensions persist, and local authorities continue to implement measures to ensure community safety and stability.
