Widespread Attack on Kyiv and Ukrainian Regions

According to UATV: On June 2, 2023, Russia launched strikes against Kyiv and more than ten regions across Ukraine. This large-scale assault targeted both the capital and a broad swath of the country, affecting areas such as:

  • Dnipropetrovsk
  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Kharkiv
  • Donetsk
  • Mykolaiv
  • Poltava
  • Sumy
  • Chernihiv
  • Khmelnytskyi regions

The attacks caused severe damage to residential buildings, critical infrastructure, and commercial properties.

Impact and Destruction

In Dnipro, seven apartment blocks were completely destroyed, and around 50 others sustained damage. Over 90 apartments are now uninhabitable. The strikes also shattered more than 2,000 windows and damaged roughly 30 vehicles. During the attack on a nine-story residential building in Dnipro, two children were injured.

Kharkiv saw damage to ten residential buildings, leaving 14 people injured, including one child. The Russian military deployed 15 Geran-2 attack drones and two missiles against the city. Residents described terrifying moments during the assault:

“When the first rocket hit, I woke up. When the second one struck, my windows shattered and water started dripping from above. I threw a robe over my pajamas and ran outside. Later I shook it out because it was full of glass shards.” — Lyudmyla, a Kharkiv resident

In Zaporizhzhia, more than 20 explosions were reported, damaging four apartment buildings. In the Khmelnytskyi region, the attacks sparked fires at four locations. In Sumy, Russian forces struck a residential area on the morning of June 2, injuring three people. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated:

“Ten residential buildings were damaged, a private home was destroyed, and windows were broken at a school and a kindergarten. Our municipal services are working in all affected districts.”

The situation remains critical across the regions, with local emergency teams working to manage the aftermath. Rescuer Roman Vovk described the scene: 'A Shahed drone landed on a rooftop without detonating. Our unit stood guard until the explosive and detonation components were removed.'

These events highlight the severity of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which continues to inflict heavy losses on both infrastructure and civilian life. The targeting of residential areas and critical facilities underscores the escalating violence and its devastating toll on ordinary people, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian aid and reconstruction. Repeated attacks of this nature threaten the safety and stability of the hardest-hit regions.
