Strikes on Civilian Infrastructure in Ukraine

According to UATV: On July 2, 2023, Russian forces launched attacks targeting civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, leaving three people wounded—a 37-year-old man, a 36-year-old woman, and a 7-year-old girl. The strikes hit a postal vehicle in the Sumy district and a gas station in Kharkiv.

Details of the Attack

The assault on the gas station occurred around 5:50 PM. According to the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor's Office, 'a hostile drone struck the gas station grounds, injuring three individuals.' The driver and a postal worker hurt in the attack on the mail vehicle received prompt medical care. Local authorities stated, 'The driver and postal worker were injured in the strike. Medics provided them with necessary assistance, and their lives are currently not in danger.'

Notably, the postal vehicle had been acquired with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Earlier that same day, Russian troops also dropped guided aerial bombs on the Sumy community, underscoring the ongoing aggression and the threat posed to civilians.

This attack is part of the protracted conflict in Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2014. Strikes on civilian sites highlight the significant dangers faced by people living in combat zones. The involvement of international financial institutions like the EBRD reflects Ukraine's efforts to rebuild infrastructure and sustain its economy amid the war, but such initiatives remain vulnerable to armed assaults.
