Russian Strike on Zaporizhzhia Animal Shelter Kills Dogs and Injures Volunteer.
Shelter for Stray Dogs Hit in Zaporizhzhia Attack
According to UATV: On February 6, 2023, a Russian military strike targeted a shelter for stray dogs in Zaporizhzhia. The attack killed more than ten animals and wounded several dozen others. At the time of the bombardment, the shelter was housing over 500 dogs and cats. A volunteer working at the shelter was injured by shrapnel during the shelling.
Eyewitnesses Iryna and Oleksandr described the chaotic scene.
"A loud roar. Then an explosion: everything collapsed and started burning. Thanks to Oleksandr—he ran over and put out the fire,"Iryna stated. Oleksandr added:
"An explosion. I grabbed a fire extinguisher and ran here—the door was crumpled like paper, riddled with shrapnel. I forced it open as best I could so the women could get out, because there was an injured woman inside with a wounded leg."
The wounded animals were transported to veterinary clinics for treatment. The force of the attack was evident as shrapnel pierced the shelter's metal door. This incident underscores the brutal reality of war, where even animals and those who care for them are not spared from violence. It is a stark reminder of the conflict's indiscriminate nature.
Deepening Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine
This event is another tragic example of the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Ukraine due to the war, which inflicts suffering on both people and animals. Supporting shelters and organizations dedicated to rescuing stray animals remains critically important, as their safety is increasingly jeopardized by ongoing combat operations.
The tragedy in Zaporizhzhia serves as a powerful call for the protection of animals during armed conflicts and for continued support of the volunteers who risk their lives to save vulnerable creatures.
