Russian Strikes Force Ukrainian Railways to Reroute Trains in Three Western Regions.
Ukrainian Railway Infrastructure Targeted in Overnight Assault
According to Novyny.live: In the early hours of March 7, Russian military forces launched an attack targeting Ukraine's railway system. As a result, train services in the Rivne, Vinnytsia, and Zhytomyr regions were forced to operate on altered routes. Ukraine's state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, confirmed that infrastructure sustained damage, and de-energized sections are now being serviced by backup diesel locomotives. These western regions, previously considered relatively safer, are critical logistical hubs for both civilian and military transport.
Detailing the scale of the assault, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the attackers used 29 missiles, nearly half of which were ballistic, and launched close to five hundred drones across Ukraine. In the city of Kharkiv, a separate missile strike resulted in the deaths of eight people.
“Our monitoring teams managed to protect dozens of passenger trains from over a hundred drones and missiles. We apologize for the forced stops and several nighttime evacuations—the worst was avoided thanks to the coordinated work of railway staff and the proficiency of the Defense Forces.”

Ongoing Recovery Efforts
Repair work is currently ongoing in the Zhytomyr region, where significant damage to the railway tracks was recorded due to a large number of drone impacts. The resulting detours have caused delays for a number of train services. Ukrzaliznytsia emphasized that restoration efforts are continuing around the clock.
This attack underscores the continuation of Russia's aggressive campaign against Ukraine and the conflict's direct impact on civilian infrastructure. As a critical artery for passenger and freight transport, the railway system's repeated targeting causes substantial losses, affecting both the economy and civilian mobility. Restoring the damaged infrastructure will remain a priority for Ukrzaliznytsia during the war, as ensuring passenger safety and maintaining the transport network's functionality are vital for the country during this challenging period.
