Finnish authorities have reported an increase in the number of GPS disruptions observed over the past week. According to the Federal Transport and Communications Agency Traficom, disruptions have become significantly more widespread.

At night, while piloting ships near Kotka and Hamina on the southern coast of Finland, a maritime pilot encountered serious GPS and radar malfunctions. GPS was unavailable for 90% of the route between the Orrengrund pilot substation and the Hamina harbor.

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War note that these disruptions coincide with jamming operations located on Russian territory, affecting the Baltic and other European countries.

Recall that last year GPS was jammed on a plane carrying the UK Minister of Defense, which led to the cancellation of several Finnish carrier flights. GPS also interfered with flights to the Estonian city of Tartu until the airport installed a landing system that does not rely on satellite signals.

It is likely that the GPS jamming by Russia is part of a hybrid campaign aimed at NATO countries, intending to undermine support for Ukraine and the unity of the Alliance.

Additionally, Finland is providing military aid to Ukraine, which is the 24th tranche of defense support. It includes the delivery of military equipment and costs approximately 159 million euros.
