Zelenskyy Warns of Russian Plans to Deploy 'Oreshnik' Missiles in Belarus.
The 'Oreshnik' Ballistic Missile Situation
According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed serious concern over Russia's preparations to station its 'Oreshnik' ballistic missile system in Belarus. This development, centered on the role of self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, poses a significant threat to regional security and stability.
The 'Oreshnik' is a new Russian medium-range ballistic missile, launched from a mobile ground platform and capable of carrying either nuclear or conventional warheads. Open-source intelligence first reported its existence in 2024, when Russian forces used it in a November strike on infrastructure in Dnipro. The missile was also deployed in the Lviv region on the night of January 9, 2024. Currently, the Russian army possesses no more than three or four of these missiles, with the Kremlin planning to begin serial production only in 2026.
Concerns of the Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 'the next step is preparing a site for the deployment of the 'Oreshnik' on Belarusian territory.' He emphasized that this decision rests with Lukashenko and urged the Belarusian people to understand the grave risks involved. Zelenskyy further stressed:
'Lukashenko is making a huge mistake. The issue is not just the 'Oreshnik.' Everyone can see they are putting on more of a show right now. They haven't even brought in the entire 'Oreshnik' system yet, just the associated vehicles. They are already doing everything to frighten Europe.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The Ukrainian President suggested that Russia might introduce the 'Oreshnik' into Belarus without Lukashenko's explicit consent. This potential deployment is viewed as part of Russia's broader strategy to project power and intimidate its neighbors, leveraging Belarusian territory.
Zelenskyy also addressed related threats in the region: 'We have done everything to ensure those three or four missiles are no longer operational. We had to do this because Russia was using attack drones, and not only via Belarus.' This situation highlights the escalating tensions between Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine, demanding a stronger international response.
The potential basing of the 'Oreshnik' ballistic missile in Belarus could dramatically alter the military balance in the region and heighten threats to neighboring countries, particularly Ukraine. It may prompt new actions from NATO and other international bodies monitoring the conflict. The situation requires careful observation, as further moves by Russia and Belarus could have profound implications for overall European security.
