Finland's Former Intelligence Chief: Russia Is Preparing for a Protracted Conflict and a NATO Challenge.
Russia's Military Threat
According to TSN.ua: According to Pekka Toveri, Finland's former head of military intelligence, Russia is preparing for a long-term war and may attempt to challenge NATO, despite suffering heavy army casualties. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has stated that the monthly death toll among Russian forces is between 20,000 and 25,000. These figures point to substantial human losses, yet they have not diminished Russia's resolve to continue its military campaign. This assessment comes as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine enters its third year, with no end in sight.
An Assessment of the Economic Situation
Toveri noted that Russia lacks the capacity to pose a large-scale military threat to NATO. However, he stated that Putin's preparations for a confrontation with the alliance are undeniable. The expert assessed that Russia's economy has effectively been transformed into a war economy, while other sectors suffer and decline. The only area experiencing growth is defense manufacturing.
Toveri also expressed that a scenario involving a limited operation against a NATO member state is entirely realistic in the near future. This underscores the seriousness of the situation and the potential risks the North Atlantic Alliance may face due to Russia's escalating aggression.
“Toveri's expressed views show that, despite significant losses, Russia continues to consider itself capable of waging a long-term war.” - Pekka Toveri
In this context, the importance of NATO's monitoring of the situation is growing, considering potential threats to the security of member states. Taking these factors into account could be key in formulating response strategies to potential challenges from Russia.
