Russian Shelling Damages Homes and Kills Pets in Zaporizhzhia.
Residential District in Zaporizhzhia Targeted by Shelling
According to UATV: On January 26, 2023, Russian Federation forces launched an attack on a residential area of Zaporizhzhia. The assault damaged ten private houses and resulted in the deaths of family pets. While no civilians were reported injured, residents whose homes were struck are now dealing with the devastating aftermath.
One rocket pierced the roof of a house belonging to a woman named Svitlana, killing her two dogs.
“The dogs were killed: one by shrapnel, and the other was hit directly. The roof was pierced right through the middle. Now we have to see what can be done,” said Svitlana.Another rocket struck a neighboring house, causing significant destruction. A resident of that home, Serhii, reported:
“Six cluster munitions landed here. The roof is smashed, a beam is broken, and the windows are blown out. My car is destroyed: the radiator, the windshield, the rear window, the side windows—it's all shredded,” said Serhii.
The Broader Context in the Region
This attack is not an isolated event for Zaporizhzhia. Over the preceding ten days, more than 120 homes have been damaged, with 19 apartment buildings requiring major repairs. Pavlo Zhukov, another local resident, described the impact:
“There’s a hole here, the roof damaged by a cluster munition. Now we will cover the hole with reinforced film to at least stop the main leak. That’s all we can do for now,” said Pavlo Zhukov.
This incident underscores the severity of the situation in the region and the urgent need for aid for those affected. The city of Zaporizhzhia, home to a major nuclear power plant, has been a frequent target since the early stages of Russia's full-scale invasion.
The shelling of Zaporizhzhia's residential areas reflects the ongoing escalation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, leading to widespread destruction and civilian suffering. Local authorities and humanitarian organizations are compelled to respond by providing assistance to attack victims and taking measures to enhance the safety of the region's inhabitants.
