Russian Attack on Zaporizhzhia Injures Child and Damages Over 80 Homes.
Zaporizhzhia Shelling on February 26
According to UATV: On February 26, Russian military forces targeted residential districts of Zaporizhzhia with drones, ballistic missiles, and guided aerial bombs. The attack injured 10 people, including an eight-year-old child. More than 80 homes sustained significant damage, and two shopping centers were hit, one of which was partially destroyed by fire. This assault is part of a broader pattern of attacks on Ukrainian cities far from the front lines.
The assault began around 3:00 a.m., while most residents were asleep. Locals described terrifying moments they endured during the bombardment.
“I was already awake; the explosions woke me up at three in the morning. Then at four, something hit our building. The windows blew out. Now there's wind blowing through the balcony and the room.” - Natalya
The blasts were so powerful they damaged the facade walls and floor slabs of an apartment building. Liliya, one of the victims, noted: “The window was blown out, frame and all. Everything landed on the bed. It injured my arm and face a little. It's okay. It will heal before the wedding.” Cleanup operations are currently underway at the impact sites.
“There's a lot of work; right now we're dealing with hazardous, dangling structures. After that, we'll clear the debris and haul it away,” said Oleksiy, who is involved in the recovery efforts.
Approximately 20 explosions were recorded in total, inflicting serious harm not only to residential buildings but also to the city's infrastructure. Damage assessment and aid for the victims are ongoing.
The Regional Context

Such attacks risk deepening the humanitarian crisis in the region, as those affected require urgent medical and social support. Local authorities have committed to assessing the damage and beginning reconstruction, but the situation remains tense, and residents need assistance to rebuild their lives.
