Russia Shifts Naval Strategy in the Black Sea: Submarines Withdraw as Surface Ship Attacks Intensify.
A Strategic Shift
According to Novyny.live: Russia is altering its naval tactics in the Black Sea, scaling back its use of submarines while increasing the number of attacks launched from surface warships. This marks a significant change in its military approach. Currently, submarines have virtually disappeared from the Black Sea's waters. For the past two years, Russia had relied heavily on its submarine fleet, but now only two cruise missile-carrying submarines remain operational.
"Any maintenance now is a risk," emphasized Dmytro Pletenchuk, a spokesman for the Ukrainian Navy, highlighting the difficulties Russian forces face in sustaining their undersea fleet. This vulnerability is a key factor in the ongoing maritime conflict.
In contrast, five surface vessels capable of launching 'Kalibr' cruise missiles remain in service. These are:
- three small missile ships of the 'Buyan' class
- two frigates—the 'Admiral Essen' and the 'Admiral Makarov'
This tactical pivot likely reflects Russia's adaptation to evolving battlefield conditions and the need to optimize its available resources. The reduction in submarine activity suggests the Russian command is seeking more efficient ways to utilize its assets, focusing on surface ships that can deliver missile strikes with a potentially lower risk of losses. This strategic change could significantly impact the future course of military operations in the region.
The shift in Russia's naval posture may stem from a combination of factors, including the challenges of maintaining its submarine force and the necessity to adapt to new combat realities. By concentrating on surface-launched strikes, Russia may be attempting to preserve its more vulnerable and harder-to-replace undersea capabilities while continuing its bombardment campaign.
