Russia used Trump’s envoy: how Witkoff advised Putin to manipulate the US.
According to ТСН: Special envoy of US President Donald Trump for peace negotiations, Steve Witkoff, turned out to be a 'useful idiot' whom Russia used for manipulations to influence the White House's position on the war in Ukraine. The leak of his conversation with Vladimir Putin's assistant Yuri Ushakov shows that Witkoff provided advice aimed at helping Putin more successfully promote Kremlin's interests in his negotiations with Trump.
Violation of unwritten rules
David Blair, an expert on international relations, notes that the conversation between Witkoff and Ushakov is ordinary, but its content raises questions. In diplomacy, it is important to be open and discuss ideas beyond public statements, but there is an unwritten rule: you cannot teach a representative of an enemy state how to manipulate your leadership.
‘At the moment you start helping your interlocutors make your boss agree with their ideas, you become subject to manipulations,’ emphasized Blair.
Scenario for Putin
The leak of the transcript of the conversation, published by Bloomberg, shows how Witkoff actively assisted the Russian side. He recommended to Ushakov that Putin should call Trump regarding a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, to 'confirm that you greet the president with this achievement, that you supported him… that you respect him as a man of peace.'
‘I think this will lead to a really good conversation,’ added Witkoff.
Additionally, Witkoff suggested to Ushakov to jointly develop a '20-point peace proposal' for Ukraine, which would essentially allow Russia to determine Ukraine’s fate without the involvement of its leadership and European partners.
‘Anyone who read the leak of the conversation cannot avoid the conclusion that Witkoff is the useful idiot for the Russians — he is willing, eager, and eager to help their plans,’ states David Blair.
According to information from Western media, the Kremlin deliberately 'leaked' records of conversations of Trump’s assistants with the Russians to disrupt the 'peace' plan and negotiations on ending the war. This scandal gained so much attention that Congress is already demanding Witkoff’s resignation, who expressed 'deepest respect for Putin' in his conversation with Ushakov.
The leak of these conversations indicates serious problems in international diplomacy and the question of how effectively the US is able to protect its interests on the global stage. The situation may have significant implications for the further development of negotiations regarding Ukraine and shaping a strategy for interaction with Russia.
