Zaporizhzhia Attack Targets Educational Institutions

According to TSN.ua: On February 26, 2023, Russian military forces launched another strike on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, deliberately targeting educational facilities. The assault damaged the building of one such institution. Mayor Ivan Fedorov stated,

"This is another enemy strike. Damage to the building of one educational institution has been recorded. A team has been dispatched to the site for inspection."

The attack caused a power outage that halted the district heating system, leaving a section of Zaporizhzhia without central heating. Oleksiy Kuleba reported that

"in Zaporizhzhia itself, the heating supply has been temporarily suspended in part of the city due to the power outage. Reserve power sources have been activated."
During the air raid alert, 41 children were forced to shelter underground, highlighting the direct threat to civilian safety posed by the assault. These strikes on civilian infrastructure are part of a broader pattern of attacks that have characterized the full-scale invasion.

Impact of Aggression on the Education Sector

This incident is part of Russia's ongoing military campaign to destabilize Ukraine, with the education sector repeatedly coming under fire. Attacks on schools and universities underscore the severe risks faced by children and educators during the war, raising profound concerns among local and international organizations. The targeting of schools is considered a war crime under international humanitarian law.

Restoring heating services and ensuring the security of educational facilities remain critical priorities for local authorities in the aftermath of the bombardment.
