Moscow Blames Washington for Broken Deal: Inside the Trump-Putin Meeting in Anchorage.
The Anchorage Talks
According to Espreso.tv: Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian president, has accused the United States of failing to uphold agreements reached during a high-level meeting in Anchorage between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. That session took place on August 15, 2025, lasting nearly three hours in a '3-on-3' format. Trump later stated that 'there is no deal yet,' though he acknowledged the two sides came close to signing one.
Developments at the G7 Summit
Speaking at the G7 summit, Emmanuel Macron said Trump had come to understand Russia’s reluctance to negotiate. Macron also reaffirmed his support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity. According to Macron, the Anchorage deal—which would have handed over unoccupied Ukrainian territory to Russia—was nearly finalized until European intervention turned the tide.
Commenting on the current state of affairs, Ushakov remarked:
“At this point, one side remains committed to the understandings reached in Anchorage, while the other side, as is now clear, has proven unable to fulfill its part of the bargain.”Meanwhile, Macron noted that the
“spirit of Anchorage”continues to guide Russia’s approach to negotiations.
This situation highlights the complexity of international diplomacy, particularly amid the ongoing Ukraine crisis. The failure to implement the agreement points to diverging interpretations of the deal by Moscow and Washington, as well as possible political maneuvering by other stakeholders. European leaders like Macron, by standing firm on Ukraine’s territorial integrity, underscore the importance of collective action in resolving the protracted conflict. It also shows that questions of peace and stability in the region remain central to the global political agenda.
