Russian Drone Strike Destroys Church in Kharkiv Region for the Second Time.
Attack on the Church in Zakitne
According to Espreso.tv: A religious building in the village of Zakitne was completely destroyed on May 30 when Russian forces targeted it with a drone. This marks the second instance of a church being wiped out in this same settlement. According to the 81st Separate Airmobile Slobozhanska Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, an incendiary bomb was dropped onto the roof of the church, which had been constructed between 2009 and 2010 and consecrated on July 31, 2010.
Historical Background
The first destruction of a church in Zakitne occurred in the 1930s during the Soviet regime's anti-religious campaign. This recent attack has sparked outrage among local residents. Priest Yaroslav shared his hopes and disappointment:
“I had hoped that the church in the village would stand until the end, and after our soldiers liberate it, I could return. But the Russians…” — Priest Yaroslav
For context, on the night of May 24, several historic and commercial buildings in Kyiv were also damaged, highlighting the ongoing pattern of strikes against civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
The destruction of the church in Zakitne is part of the broader military conflict in Ukraine, demonstrating a deliberate campaign to demolish cultural and religious sites. This has caused deep concern among locals and religious leaders, who view it not only as physical destruction but also as spiritual aggression. Such attacks on civilian targets could have lasting effects on the social fabric of communities and their post-conflict recovery.
