Three Drones Destroy 19th-Century Historic Estate in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Region.
Russian Forces Destroy Architectural and Cultural Landmark in Zaporizhzhia Oblast
According to Novyny.live: On Monday, June 22, 2023, at approximately 4:00 a.m., Russian troops launched an attack on a 19th-century architectural monument in the village of Bilenke, Zaporizhzhia Oblast, using three unmanned aerial vehicles. By 12:10 p.m., nothing remained of the estate, underscoring the scale of the destruction.
This assault was part of an ongoing series of strikes against the property that began in January 2025. In July 2025, Russian aircraft also targeted Bilenke, and a third strike hit the estate on February 27, 2026. The architectural landmark once belonged to the Myklashevsky family, a lineage of Cossack officers, and had been repurposed as a sewing workshop until 2005.
Impact of Military Actions on Cultural Heritage
In October 2020, 400 young oak saplings were planted as part of an effort to revive the estate’s arboretum, but unfortunately, the site has since suffered damage due to military operations. This incident highlights the severe consequences of the conflict for the region’s cultural heritage.
The destruction of this architectural monument in Zaporizhzhia Oblast serves as a stark example of how cultural heritage is being ravaged amid the ongoing war. Such acts not only harm historic structures but also erode the identity and collective memory of local communities. This underscores the urgent need for international attention to safeguard cultural treasures in active combat zones.
