Russia’s Donbas Strategy Unchanged Since 2022: The Battle for a Key Urban Hub Intensifies.
Russia’s Frontline Strategy
According to UATV: Since 2022, Moscow’s military objectives in Donbas have remained consistent: full occupation of the region. Heavy fighting continues in Donetsk Oblast, particularly near Kostiantynivka, where Russian forces are focusing on capturing the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk metropolitan area. In an interview on July 9, 2023, broadcast by the FREEДОМ channel, military expert Serhiy Hrabsky described the situation there as extremely difficult.
On July 8, 2023, Ukraine recorded 268 combat engagements. On the Pokrovsk front, Ukrainian defense forces successfully repelled 38 enemy attacks. Hrabsky noted that Russian troops are pressing north of Pokrovsk to gain full control over the road linking Bakhmut, Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk, and onward to Pavlohrad. He emphasized that Kostiantynivka is a critical node because a vital transport route to Kramatorsk passes through the city.
Frontline Situation
Hrabsky also highlighted the importance of Sloviansk and Lyman, stating that these sectors are just as crucial to the battle for the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk agglomeration as Kostiantynivka. He pointed out that Russian forces are attempting to capture Lyman with minimal damage, reflecting a flanking tactic. According to the expert, enemy operations include efforts to break through toward Sviatohirsk, revealing their strategic ambitions in the area.
As a result, the frontline remains tense, with ongoing combat. Ukrainian defense forces are actively countering enemy attempts to advance in key directions, especially around Kostiantynivka and the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk urban area.
In the context of these sustained hostilities, control over critical transport corridors—such as the road connecting Bakhmut and Kostiantynivka—could significantly shape the conflict’s trajectory. Losing or securing these routes might shift the balance of power on the battlefield, drawing heightened attention from both sides. Analysts will continue monitoring developments, particularly as potential shifts in military strategies emerge.
