Russian troops captured Siversk after 41 months of fighting: what it means.
According to ТСН: Russian troops have likely captured the city of Siversk, a result of 41 months of hostilities.
Situation on the front
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Ukrainian military analyst Kostiantyn Mashovets noted that Russians completed the capture of Siversk and advanced to heights in the west and northwest of this locality, also reaching a chalk quarry west of Siversk.
He also reported tactical 'successes' of Russian troops north of Sviato-Pokrovske, where Fedorivka and Vasyukivka (all located southwest of Siversk) were taken under control since mid-November.
Analysts' findings
It is known that Russian troops took 33 days to fully capture the city.
Siversk, which has an area of about 10 square kilometers, had a population of approximately 11,000 before the war. Russian troops took 41 months to advance 12 kilometers from Lysychansk to the western border of Siversk.
Defense of Siversk
It should be noted that since 2022, a foothold has formed around Siversk, held by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, protecting the approaches to the agglomerations of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
According to a statement from the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade, Russian troops attempted to infiltrate the city, taking advantage of bad weather conditions, particularly dense fog. They managed to accumulate within the residential areas and basements.
“Siversk remains under constant enemy pressure: some are trying to infiltrate the city, while others are moving on the approaches, hoping to establish themselves.”
Maps from OSINT projects show that at least the eastern part of Siversk is already under full Russian control, while the western part remains a 'gray zone'.
The capture of Siversk has great strategic significance as it opens new routes for the advancement of Russian troops towards other localities in Donetsk. These events highlight the duration and complexity of hostilities in this region, as well as continuing to pose serious challenges for Ukrainian forces trying to defend their territories.
