Nebenzia's UN Address

According to TSN.ua: During a UN Security Council meeting on February 24, 2023, marking the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, made statements regarding his personal heritage. He asserted that he is Ukrainian and a descendant of Zaporozhian Cossacks. These remarks prompted a sharp reaction from the Ukrainian representative, Mariana Betsa, who serves as Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Defense and UN representative.

Ukraine's Response to Nebenzia

Mariana Betsa did not let Nebenzia's claims go unanswered. She stated:

'Nebenzia, you are not Ukrainian - do not pretend to be Ukrainian.'

Betsa further emphasized that 'no nation that unites with Russia will ever become one people with it.' These comments underscore the profound differences in the perception of identity and history between Ukraine and Russia, a core issue in the ongoing conflict.

The UN Security Council Meeting and the Scandal

The Security Council session occurred against a backdrop of significant political developments. Ukraine presented a resolution that garnered 107 votes of support, while the United States was able to rally only 11 countries to its side. This fact highlights the international backing for Ukraine in its confrontation with Russian aggression and the growing isolation of Russia on the global stage.

This incident once again illuminates the deep-seated tensions between Ukraine and Russia that have persisted since the conflict began. Claims about national identity in the context of war carry significant weight, reflecting not only historical but also profound political contradictions. The international support for Ukraine, as demonstrated by the UN vote, points to a growing recognition of its sovereignty and territorial integrity worldwide.
