Russian Drone Strike in Bilohorodka Kills Two, Journalist Saves Four-Year-Old Girl.
Attack in Bilohorodka
According to Novyny.live: A Russian drone struck a residential building in Bilohorodka, Kyiv region, overnight on January 28, killing a man and a woman. Their four-year-old daughter was rescued from the scene by journalist Mariana Kushnir, who was present at the time of the attack. This incident is part of a wider pattern of strikes on civilian areas since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022.
Journalist's Heroic Actions
Mariana Kushnir, a journalist for Radio Liberty, has worked in media since 2015. She sustained a concussion while on duty in March 2022. For her professional work, Kushnir was awarded the 'Honor of the Profession' journalism prize in both 2022 and 2024, and received a special distinction from the Bucha Journalism Conference in 2023.
During the incident, Kushnir noticed flames spreading from the house. She realized the child's parents were likely asleep on the second floor.
"I ran and grabbed the child from the sofa, carried her out of the apartment, handed her to a neighbor, and ran back inside. I thought maybe people inside might still be alive. But the fire had already spread too intensely. From what I later learned, the drone hit in such a way that the two people—the man and woman—were trapped under debris and perished there,"she commented on the event.
This tragic case underscores once more the peril faced by civilians in conflict zones, as well as the courage of individuals willing to risk their lives to save others in emergencies.
The attack in Bilohorodka raises urgent questions about the safety of non-combatants during warfare. The use of drones to target residential buildings is a grave concern that endangers innocent lives. Such events also highlight the critical role of journalists who, while performing their duties, often find themselves providing vital aid in life-threatening situations.
