Russian Drone Targets Latvian News Crew

According to Novyny.live: A Russian FPV drone detonated near a vehicle carrying a Latvian Public Broadcasting (LSM) film crew in Ukraine's Donetsk region. The journalists, Odita Krenberga and cameraman Aigars Kovalevskis, were traveling with a Ukrainian soldier named Oleksandr to film a story about a Latvian volunteer with the call sign 'NATO'. The attack highlights the extreme dangers faced by international media covering the war in Ukraine, where frontline reporting is vital for global awareness.

The explosion damaged their car with shrapnel, but all three occupants miraculously escaped injury. The journalists are acutely aware of the risks inherent in working on the front lines, underscoring the critical importance of their profession during wartime.

This is not an isolated event. On February 8, journalists from the Ukrainian channel 'Inter' came under Russian fire in Donetsk, resulting in injuries to correspondent Ihor Levenok. Furthermore, drone operator, artist, and journalist Lana 'Sati' Chornohorska was killed on the front line, demonstrating the severe level of threat confronting journalists in active combat zones.

We hold the work and courage of our journalists in the highest regard. In this situation, independent journalism serves as a crucial counterbalance to deceptive and manipulative narratives.

Anita Brauna, LSM Representative

The incident reflects the escalating danger for media personnel operating in conflict areas, particularly in Ukraine. Despite these threats, their work remains critically important for providing objective information from the front and highlighting the war's humanitarian impact. This underscores the urgent need to protect journalists and support independent journalism during the conflict.
