Russian gas: Slovakia wants to continue transit through Ukraine, Austria terminates contract with 'Gazprom'.
Slovakia is negotiating the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that it is important for their country to continue the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine until 2025. Fico mentioned: 'We are actively negotiating at the international level regarding gas deliveries in 2025.' He also noted that Slovakia does not want to pay more than necessary for geopolitical reasons and accused the West of pressuring gas transit.
The contract between Ukraine and Russia for gas supplies through pipelines expires on January 1, 2025, but Ukraine has already stated that it does not plan to extend its validity. This has prompted Europe to prepare for the termination of transit. The share of Russian gas in Europe has already decreased to 6%, and transit through Ukraine accounts for only 4%. Austria and Slovakia are subject to greater influence, as last year they received over 90% of their gas from Russia.
EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen stated that the EU is preparing for the expiration of the contract and 'completely severing the EU's energy ties with Russia.'
One Austrian company, OMV, has already reported the termination of its long-term contract with 'Gazprom' due to violations of the agreement by the Russian gas giant. In response, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer stated that Austria is preparing for the situation by increasing gas reserves and seeking other suppliers.
