For the First Time, Russia’s Military Placed on UN Blacklist Over Sexual Violence.
UN Blacklists Russian Armed Forces for Sexual Violence in Conflict
According to UATV: In an unprecedented move, the United Nations has added Russia’s armed forces to its annual blacklist for conflict-related sexual violence. The decision follows a report by the UN Secretary-General, released on May 29, 2026, which documents more than 300 verified cases of sexual violence committed within Russia and in occupied areas of Ukraine. This marks the first time Russian forces have been included in the list, highlighting severe human rights abuses during the ongoing conflict.
Sexual Violence Amid Armed Conflict
The majority of confirmed victims of sexual violence are men. The number of reported cases saw a sharp increase in 2025 compared to the previous year. A total of 77 organizations worldwide were placed on the UN blacklist for conflict-related sexual violence, underscoring a global crisis affecting people in war zones.
Commenting on the decision, Andriy Sybiha stated: 'This is a crucial step on the painful path toward truth and justice.'
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine further emphasized that 'sexual violence by Russian troops is systematic in nature,' pointing to the severe consequences of such actions for society and the international community.
This UN report serves as a critical document reflecting the realities of the conflict and calls for action to protect victims of sexual violence in wartime. The inclusion of Russian armed forces in the blacklist sends a clear signal to the world about the urgent need for a more robust response to human rights violations.
Adding Russian troops to the UN blacklist underscores the gravity of the human rights situation amid the conflict. This decision may strengthen international pressure on Russia and raise awareness about the issue of sexual violence in armed conflicts. Concerted action by the global community could significantly impact victim protection and help prevent such crimes in the future.
