According to ТСН: Each of us chooses our own way to relax: whether it be reading a book or watching a series. However, experts say that our daily habits actually significantly affect our health more than we usually think.

The University of South Australia conducted a study that included 397 elderly individuals. The aim of the research was to identify the connection between their habits and the risk of cognitive decline.

The results demonstrate a positive impact on people who enjoy reading and actively socializing. The study showed that activities such as reading, crafting, socializing, music, and prayer are beneficial for the brain.

The Harm of Television and Video Games

However, experts warn that watching television and playing video games can negatively impact brain health.

“A sedentary lifestyle that does not support mental stimulation or social interaction, such as reading or chatting with friends, is beneficial for cognitive functions, while others, such as watching TV or playing video games, have a negative impact. Therefore, the type of activity is important,” emphasized researcher Maddison Mellow.

She also highlighted that while the general recommendation to “move more, sit less” is beneficial for the heart, the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on the brain is much more complex.

“The best for the body and the brain is active movement that brings joy and makes the heart beat faster. However, even short five-minute breaks yield noticeable results,” Mellow advises.

The researcher recommends that if you plan to hold a movie marathon, take breaks for physical exercise or partially replace watching with reading, which better develops the brain.

She emphasized that even small changes in daily life can help form beneficial habits.

Earlier, scientists identified habits that can contribute to rejuvenating brain tissue, regardless of age.

These results underscore the importance of an active lifestyle to support cognitive functions at any age. Maintaining mental activity and social interaction can significantly improve quality of life, reducing the risks of neurodegenerative diseases.
