Trump and Putin Meeting on August 15: Is the Kremlin Ready for Peace in Ukraine

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte believes that the upcoming summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, scheduled for August 15, will be a test of the Russian leader's seriousness. During the meeting, they will discuss not only specific territories but also focus on security issues.

This was reported by ABC News.

What Rutte Says About the Occupied Territories of Ukraine

Rutte noted that next Friday will be very important, as it will test how serious Putin is about ending the war in Ukraine. At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine must make its own decisions about its future.

“Regarding full-scale negotiations, we hope that next Friday will be a significant step in this process. We will talk about territories, about security guarantees, but it is also important to understand that Ukraine independently determines its future path and must remain a sovereign state, free in choosing its geopolitical future, without restrictions on its armed forces. And for NATO, it is crucial not to have restrictions in the east.”

According to Rutte, Trump wants to end the war in Ukraine, but Russia currently controls some Ukrainian territories. Therefore, the question arises 'what will the future look like after a ceasefire, including security guarantees for Ukraine.'

“When it comes to territories, about possible recognition by Russia of actual control over parts of Ukrainian land, it is important that this is effective recognition and not just a political formal recognition.”

Recently, Trump expressed the opinion that a territorial exchange in a peace agreement with Ukraine is possible, which he said would be 'beneficial for both sides.'

The president also emphasized that Zelensky should be ready to sign 'something.' Both sides, according to the American leader, must be prepared for compromises.

In response, Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the resolution of the Ukrainian territorial issue is already enshrined in the Constitution.

The outcomes of the upcoming summit between Trump and Putin will set the tone for the issue of resolving the conflict in Ukraine and security guarantees for the country. Both sides intend to explore the possibility of ending the war and addressing the problem of occupied territories. The main task is to avoid the risk of escalating the conflict and to maintain peace in the region. At this point, the situation of the Ukrainian state remains complex, with occupied territories in the eastern part of the country under Russian control.
