Progress Toward Peace

According to Novyny.live: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has shared his assessment of how Donald Trump’s team is approaching the goal of peace in Ukraine. According to Rutte, the outcome largely hinges on the position of Vladimir Putin. He pointed out that Ukraine continues to perform effectively on the battlefield, stating:

'Ukraine is doing everything right on the battlefield.' — Mark Rutte

In his remarks, Rutte referenced the Trump team, which includes:

  • Steve Witkoff
  • Jared Kushner
  • Mark Rubio

The NATO chief noted that Trump’s team is actively pursuing peace initiatives, but so far Putin has only reiterated his maximalist demands. 'The Trump team is working on this, but Putin is just repeating maximalist demands,' Rutte said.

The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with between 30,000 and 35,000 Russians killed or seriously wounded every month due to fighting. Notably, around 50% of Russia’s state budget is allocated to defense, and 75% of its tax revenue goes toward funding the war. 'Let’s pray for this, of course,' Rutte added, expressing hope for positive change in the region.

Rutte’s comments underscore the critical role of international diplomacy amid the protracted war in Ukraine. By highlighting the achievements of Ukrainian forces, he aims to draw attention to the need for constructive dialogue to achieve peace. Currently, Russia’s stance—particularly Putin’s demands—complicates the prospects for peace talks, further escalating tensions in the region.
