New rule regarding cabin baggage on Ryanair

According to The Sun: The airline Ryanair has announced that its passengers will be able to take larger items on board for free. Earlier in July, the maximum dimensions of cabin baggage were increased from 40x20x25 cm to 40x30x20 cm, and this change has already been implemented in airports across Europe.

New rules for passengers

The airline was waiting for the implementation of the new cabin baggage sizes at 235 airports where it operates, and now passengers can bring personal luggage measuring 40x30x20 cm on board for free. The overall volume of the bag has increased from 20 to 24 liters, which is 33% more than the EU's standard free cabin baggage dimensions of 40x30x15 cm.

Each passenger can take one cabin bag on board, which must fit under the seat. Ryanair's CMO, Dara Brady, noted:

“Our baggage size indicators at all airports have now been ‘resized’ to accommodate this larger free cabin baggage.”

He also added:

“All passengers wishing to take a second cabin bag with them can use our priority boarding service.”
It should be remembered that those who do not comply with the new rules risk paying a fine for carrying luggage on the plane.

Financial aspect of the new rules

Passengers attempting to board with a bag that does not meet the requirements may be fined up to £75, depending on the route and date of travel. Ryanair management recently announced plans to increase bonuses for employees who monitor passengers with excess baggage.

CEO Michael O'Leary said:

“I absolutely do not apologize for catching people trying to circumvent the rules.”

If passengers want to travel with a larger bag, they will have to pay an additional fee. Another innovation is that Ryanair is transitioning to a paperless system: from November 3, 2025, the company will no longer accept printed boarding passes.

However, at some airports, such as Morocco and Turkey (excluding Dalaman), as well as Tirana Airport in Albania, mobile boarding passes will not be accepted. Passengers from these airports must download the boarding pass from the electronic confirmation or application, print it out, and have it with them.

Current Ryanair baggage rules

According to information on the Ryanair website, all passengers can take a small bag on board for free.

It must fit under the seat in front, which can be a handbag, laptop bag, or backpack, and must meet the dimensions of 40x30x20 cm.

For an additional fee, passengers can take a cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg on board.

It must be stored in the overhead compartment and must meet the dimensions of 55x40x20 cm.

To get even more space, passengers can pay for checked baggage up to 23 kg (which must be booked in advance).

It must be checked in at the registration desk before passing through security and must meet the dimensions of 80x120x120 cm.

Alamy The renewal of baggage rules at Ryanair is part of the company's efforts to improve passenger service and adapt to modern needs. Changes in cabin baggage sizes and the transition to a paperless system may worry some travelers, but overall they contribute to a more convenient and faster check-in process. Such an initiative may enhance the airline's competitiveness in a market where every detail matters.
