Fake about the attack on Putin's residence: what is actually happening in negotiations.
According to ТСН: American media reports that CIA Director John Ratcliffe briefed Donald Trump on Ukraine's attempt to strike a military target near Putin's residence. Trump, in turn, shared a link to a New York Post article on social media:
“Putin's bravado about the 'attack' shows that Russia is the one standing in the way of peace.”
A fake news story appeared in the information space about a supposed attack by 91 drones on Putin's residence in Valdai, which was spread by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. This happened the day after the meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump in Florida. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that only 89 drones were shot down on the night of December 29, and residents of the Novgorod region reported no explosions or drone signals.
Trump reacted: however, the US did not change its position
During a press conference following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit on December 29, Trump admitted that
“he was very angry,”upon hearing from Putin about the fabricated attack by Ukrainian drones. However, he also noted that it could be fake.
Republican Congressman Don Bacon criticized Trump's position, emphasizing that Putin is a known liar. Former US Army Commander in Europe Ben Hodges confirmed that Kyiv would not benefit from such a strike, as Ukrainian forces are focused on attacks on Russian oil and gas infrastructure. Hodges noted:
“The worst part is that Trump believed this right after the phone conversation with Putin. He believed immediately.”
The Kremlin seems to have fabricated the fake about the attack on the night of December 28-29. After the meeting with Zelensky, Trump did not call Putin right away, but did so only on December 29. Immediately after the conversation, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov stated that Putin discussed this alleged attack with Trump, after which the American leader supposedly changed his attitude towards Ukraine.
What will Putin do next: the goal is to sabotage negotiations
In his New Year's address, Volodymyr Zelensky noted that the peace agreement being discussed is 90% ready.
“Ten percent is left. And that is significantly more than just numbers…”
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes that peace in the region could soon become a reality. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz noted that 2026 could be a decisive year for Europe. According to the publication Die Welt, European countries like France and Britain are ready to send their forces to Ukraine to monitor the ceasefire.
However, experts express doubts that Trump will be able to force Putin to stop the war for a certain period. The Kremlin's military rhetoric is escalating, and Putin continues to make demands, despite international pressure. As Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga noted, this is a typical Russian tactic - to blame others for its intentions to destabilize negotiations.
Thus, the Kremlin will continue to fabricate new fakes to sabotage negotiations and sow discord between Ukraine, Europe, and the United States. Trump, despite his statements, is unlikely to be able to significantly influence the situation.
