Fraudsters stole an astonishing amount from Ukrainians' cards: what schemes they used.
Fraudsters stole a fantastic amount from Ukrainians' cards
The press service of the National Bank of Ukraine reported that fraudsters stole an extraordinarily large sum of money from Ukrainians' cards. Although the total number of fraudulent operations has slightly decreased, criminals have begun to obtain more money from each attack.
According to the NBU, citizens of Ukraine lost about 1.1 billion hryvnias in 2024 due to card fraud - this is 37% more than last year. The main reason for this increase is the rise in the average size of an illegal operation.
The depicted graph shows that the number of fraudulent cases has decreased slightly, totaling 270 thousand incidents. It should also be noted that social engineering remains the primary method of deception, accounting for 84% of all financial losses in 2024, significantly exceeding the previous year's figure.
According to the National Bank, only 7% of the losses are related to the use of physical devices such as ATMs. This indicates that most fraud occurs in the online environment.
