Reaction of the President and IAEA
President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the drone with an explosive charge hit the protective shelter at the Chornobyl NPP. The fire was extinguished, and the radiation background did not change, but the building suffered substantial damage. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the explosion above the sarcophagus and the fire at the Chornobyl NPP.
Construction of a new shelter
The shelter of the Chornobyl NPP, which was planned for 20-40 years of operation, was built in 2019. A large amount of concrete and metal structures were used for its construction, and 90,000 workers were involved. This building was erected to ensure safety and prevent radiation leaks.
According to the State Emergency Service, the radiation background at the Chornobyl NPP after the drone attack remains normal.
