Hungarian Spy Uncovered in Western Ukraine: What We Know About the Intelligence Network.
Arrest of a Hungarian Intelligence Officer
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) has exposed Zoltan Andre, a Hungarian intelligence officer who ran a spy network in the Zakarpattia region in 2025. Operating under diplomatic cover, he recruited agents to gather information on the area's defense capabilities. Andre is a career officer in Hungarian intelligence, and some of his recruited operatives had already been detained earlier.
From 2016 to 2020, Andre was stationed in Georgia, posing as a diplomat. Starting in 2021, he shifted his focus to conducting espionage and subversive operations against Ukraine. In September 2024, his network was activated to collect data on Ukrainian military forces. This exposure came after a lengthy investigation that uncovered his role in spying activities on Ukrainian soil.
Detention of Hungarian Cash Transporters
Separately, on March 6, 2025, Hungarian armored cash transporters were intercepted. Authorities discovered around $40 million, €35 million, and 9 kilograms of gold inside the vehicles. Seven Ukrainian nationals were initially detained in the operation but were released later that day. On March 12, the impounded cash transport vehicles were returned to Oschadbank.
These events highlight the strained relations between Ukraine and Hungary and underscore the active presence of foreign intelligence services in the region. The unmasking of Zoltan Andre and his network marks a significant step in Ukraine's fight against foreign espionage. Such incidents could impact bilateral diplomatic ties and heighten security tensions in the area. For Ukraine, it remains crucial to strengthen counterintelligence measures, especially along border regions, to protect the state from external threats.
