Iranian General Identified by Ukraine for Aiding Russian Shahed Drone Production.
Iranian General's Identity Revealed
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian investigators have identified Iranian General Abdollah Mehrabi as a key figure who helped Russia establish production of the Shahed-136 attack drone. Mehrabi has been formally notified of suspicion for aiding an aggressive war against Ukraine. He serves as the head of the Jihad Research and Self-Sufficiency Organization of the Aerospace Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This development highlights Ukraine's efforts to legally target foreign enablers of Russia's war effort.
Russia-Iran Military Collaboration
A cooperation agreement between Russia and Iran for drone supplies was reached in July 2022. In January 2023, General Mehrabi visited Yelabuga in Tatarstan, where a production site for the drones was set up. As a result of this partnership, Russia began manufacturing the 'Geran-2' unmanned aerial vehicles, which is the Russian designation for the Shahed-136. Between 2023 and 2024, Russia received over 13,000 attack drones of this type.
Iran also transferred equipment and components worth more than $324 million to Russia. Specifically, Russian engineers received training, and drone operators underwent instruction. Furthermore, crew training was organized in occupied Ukrainian territories—in Crimea and the Kherson region. Ukraine's Prosecutor General, Ruslan Kravchenko, confirmed the investigation is ongoing, stating that the case against Mehrabi is considered a significant step in countering aggression against Ukraine.
This news underscores the critical role of international collaboration in military conflicts, particularly through the supply of technology and military resources. The cooperation between Iran and Russia in drone production points to deepening military integration between the two nations, which could have serious implications for regional security. Simultaneously, the actions of Ukrainian investigators demonstrate intensified efforts to hold accountable those who facilitate aggression against Ukraine, potentially affecting the international standing of both Iran and Russia.
