SBU Neutralizes GRU Hitman: Foiled Plots to Kill Sternenko and Others.
Ukrainian Security Service Thwarts Series of High-Profile Murders
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) eliminated a GRU assassin and detained over a dozen members of an intelligence network, successfully preventing a string of planned killings orchestrated by Russian special services. The operation, led by Oleksandr Poklad, First Deputy Head of the SBU, was carried out on March 24, 2023.
The hitman, who offered armed resistance during his arrest, was the direct executor slated to operate from the temporarily occupied part of Donetsk region. Among the intended targets were Serhii Sternenko and Illia Bohdanov. The suspects had been monitoring the residences and travel routes of their victims, indicating a well-organized spy network.
Operation Results
Searches conducted during the operation uncovered a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, computer equipment, voice recorders, and video cameras. The detainees have been formally charged under multiple criminal articles; if convicted, they face life imprisonment with asset forfeiture.
This operation further demonstrates the SBU's effectiveness, coming after it previously thwarted an assassination attempt on Andriy Biletsky, commander of the Third Army Corps. Russian agents had also been plotting to kill Andriy Yusov, underscoring the serious threats facing Ukraine. The SBU continues its work to combat terrorist threats and protect citizens.
This incident highlights the persistent danger posed by Russian intelligence services to Ukrainian public figures and activists. Given recent assassination attempts on prominent individuals, the SBU's role in national security has become even more critical. These counter-terrorism operations showcase the readiness of Ukrainian law enforcement to act proactively in defending citizens.
