Gdańsk Controversy: Why Zelensky Returned the Order of the White Eagle.
The Gdańsk Conference
According to Espreso.tv: Held on June 25–26, 2023, the Gdańsk Conference was a joint initiative between Poland and Ukraine. The events leading up to it sparked debate and tension, particularly surrounding the decision to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle. This prestigious award had been presented to Zelensky by Polish President Andrzej Duda in 2023.
On June 19, 2023, Minister Nawrocki made the call to revoke Zelensky’s Order of the White Eagle. The very next day, June 20, the Ukrainian leader announced his intention to return the medal. By June 22, 2023, Nawrocki’s office confirmed that the order had been received back. These moves became a focal point of discussion, as a source from the Prime Minister’s Chancellery noted, ‘Nawrocki clearly aimed to create friction in relations with Ukraine.’
Ukrainian Delegation’s Participation
Ukraine was represented at the conference by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who articulated the country’s stance on the international stage. The absence of Volodymyr Zelensky from the event also drew significant attention. Commenting on the situation, Donald Tusk described the Ukrainian president’s no-show as
“a gesture of de-escalation.”
The Gdańsk Conference served as a crucial platform for discussing cooperation between Poland and Ukraine. However, the dispute over the Order of the White Eagle that preceded it highlights the complexities in bilateral relations amid current challenges.
These events underscore the strain in Polish-Ukrainian ties, driven by political decisions and symbolic actions. Zelensky’s absence from the conference may be seen as an attempt to reduce conflict, but it also reveals existing disagreements. This situation emphasizes the need for ongoing dialogue between the two nations to overcome obstacles and maintain stability in the region.
