Deceived into Joining Russia’s Military: Hundreds of Peruvians Missing, Families Protest Outside Embassy.
Peruvian Citizens Trapped in Russia’s Army
According to Espreso.tv: An investigation by CNN has uncovered that hundreds of Peruvian men were tricked into enlisting in the Russian military under the false pretense of legitimate employment. This alarming situation has sparked widespread concern among their relatives, who are now staging protests, desperate for any news about their loved ones. In early April, a woman named Norma lost all contact with her son, prompting her and other family members to plead with authorities for help.
Official Investigations and Government Response
Peru’s public prosecutor’s office is currently investigating 36 formal complaints from citizens who allege they were fraudulently lured to Russia for work. Meanwhile, the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has sent at least 247 requests to Moscow demanding the return of its nationals who have found themselves in this unclear predicament. Estimates suggest that as many as 800 Peruvian citizens may now be serving in the Russian armed forces, highlighting the serious scale of the issue.
It is worth noting that Russia plans to recruit at least 18,500 foreign soldiers by 2026, a move that could further escalate the targeted recruitment of individuals from countries like Peru. At least 12 families have joined the protests outside the Russian embassy in Lima, their actions a powerful testament to the anxiety and helplessness these households are enduring.
This crisis not only exposes the troubling methods used to recruit foreigners into Russia’s military but also carries potential repercussions for diplomatic relations between Peru and Russia.
The growing distress among relatives may push Peruvian authorities to ramp up diplomatic efforts to safeguard their citizens. Amid rising global political tensions, such incidents could also tarnish Russia’s reputation on the world stage.
