A new bill in Spain could affect British tourists

According to The Sun: The Spanish government introduced a bill earlier this week that proposes a ban on smoking in all open areas.

The ban will cover beaches, bars, restaurant terraces, and outdoor stadiums. It will also extend to vapes and e-cigarettes.

Health Minister Monica Garcia told reporters: “We will always put public health above private interests. Everyone has the right to breathe clean air […] and live longer and better.”

Hospitality representatives sharply criticized the bill, stating that it would significantly impact their business since smokers often choose open terraces in Spain.

Smoking indoors has been banned in Spain since 2011, and on many beaches, such as L'Albir in Alicante, the ban was implemented as early as March.

The ban is also in effect on Levante and Poniente beaches in Benidorm, as well as in Barcelona and Valencia.

On the Balearic Islands, including Ibiza, Mallorca, and Menorca, smoking on beaches is also prohibited.

This ban may mark a new phase in following France, which introduced similar restrictions in outdoor areas this summer.

In France, the ban applies to beaches, parks, and bus stops, but does not cover café terraces. A fine of £114 is imposed for its violation.

Spain also has other strict rules, such as a ban on tourists wearing bikinis in towns, for which fines can reach £260, or up to £500 for tourists in Mallorca.
