Unexpected Tabarca

According to The Sun: Forget about Tenerife and Lanzarote — there is a small island off the coast of Valencia that often remains in the shadow of more popular resorts.

Tabarca is one of the smallest inhabited islands in Europe, home to approximately 50 locals.

Tabarca is located near Alicante. Although the island becomes more popular in summer, it welcomes only a few thousand tourists (in comparison, Ibiza sees 2 million visitors in just one summer season).

How to get to the island

Getting to Tabarca is easy: boats from Santa Pola take just 15 minutes, but cheaper options can take around 45 minutes one way.

In the past, the island was home to Berber pirates, and in the 18th century, fishing families who had previously been imprisoned in Tabarka, Tunisia settled here — hence the name of the island.

Activities and entertainment

Today, Tabarca is famous for its snorkeling and swimming, especially in the cozy bays. You can also rent umbrellas and sun loungers on the small Playa Grande beach.

There is a museum that tells the story of the island, as well as a lighthouse.

Although the island is small, its center features bars, cafes, and shops housed in colorful buildings.

Among local dishes, you should try caldero — a fish casserole with rice.

Most visitors stay on the island for just a day, even though there are a few small hotels owned by local residents.

However, do not expect the possibility of exploring Tabarca in the offseason.

Tourist impressions

Local resident María del Mar Valera told CNN that due to the lack of sufficient ferries, most people face difficulties in traveling to the island in winter.

“It’s very hard to lead a normal life when you can barely get to the mainland and back in a day.”

However, tourists continue to be captivated by the beauty of Tabarca — one of them noted: “The island’s coves are washed by warm waters, and there are simple restaurants offering a variety of dishes at reasonable prices. If you are looking for a bit of tranquility, this is the place.”

“Absolutely wonderful island! The landscapes are beautiful, the island is wild and unspoiled, you can swim without crowds if you avoid the usual routes.”

Ferries from Alicante to Tabarca cost about £20 round trip. Accommodation on the island can cost from £50 per night.

Alamy Tabarca is a small but unique island with its own charm. Its beauty and tranquility make it an ideal place to unwind if you want to escape the crowd. Although access to the island may be difficult during the winter months, the warmth and comfort of the locals, along with their hospitality, make Tabarca worth a visit.
