Among the deceased were Army Captain Andrew Cooley, 35, Captain Andrew Krauss, 39, Sergeant Donovan Scott, 25, and Sergeant Jadalyn Good, 23. All died as a result of the helicopter crash.

According to the Thurston County Sheriff, the helicopter lost contact with military personnel 40 miles from the base. The four special forces personnel were likely aboard the helicopter that went down about 35 miles west of the base.

A US Army representative stated that the helicopter was conducting a 'routine training flight' when communication was lost. Emergency services from King County were the first to arrive at the scene.

“Responders found what is likely the crash site,” the representative noted.

According to him, rescue efforts were hampered by difficulties in accessing the crash site.

“The situation at the crash site is critical, and the terrain has started to become too heated,” they added.

This disaster has been characterized as an 'unexpected situation' by the Army's Special Operations command. The fallen soldiers were part of the elite 'Night Stalkers' unit.

“The four service members assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) were aboard the MH-60 Black Hawk during the incident that occurred in the rural area near Joint Base Lewis-McChord,” the representative added.

Who are the Night Stalkers?

The Night Stalkers are an elite special operations unit of the US Army. They conduct helicopter flights to support special operations and regular forces, often at night.

The main missions of the Night Stalkers include:

  • insertion and extraction of special operations soldiers
  • combat missions
  • reconnaissance

Army Special Forces soldiers, known as 'Green Berets', conduct operations against terrorists in guerrilla warfare conditions in various countries.

“This remains an active situation,” the representative said, adding that the crash site was difficult to reach.

The fire resulting from the crash consumed up to one acre. Crews from the Department of Natural Resources and firefighters from the McLane Black Lake unit arrived at the scene.

Lieutenant General Jonathan Braga, the commander of USASOC, stated in a release:

“Our hearts are with the families, friends, and comrades of these Night Stalkers.”

“They were elite warriors who embodied the highest values of the Army and Army Special Operations. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten,” he added.

This disaster occurred after another helicopter incident at the same base in March when two pilots were injured during training.

This unfortunate incident highlights the risks faced by military personnel during training exercises. The fallen were part of an elite unit conducting complex missions, which makes their loss deeply felt among comrades and loved ones.

Authorities continue to investigate the causes of the crash to understand what led to this tragedy and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
