The Ambassador of Ukraine to the Czech Republic Responded to the Scandalous Statements of the Speaker of Parliament Okamura

According to ТСН: The Ambassador of Ukraine in the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zvarych, commented on the scandalous statements made by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic, Tomio Okamura, regarding Ukraine.

Zvarych published his comment on Facebook:

“The offensive and hate-filled statements of Tomio Okamura towards Ukraine and Ukrainians, expressed today in his New Year's speech, we regard as his personal position, evidently influenced by Russian propaganda.”

The diplomat noted that such statements, especially regarding the democratically elected leadership of Ukraine,

“are unworthy and absolutely unacceptable”
for the values on which the Czech Republic is based as part of the European community.

He also expressed hope that

“the authorities and civil society of the Czech Republic will give a proper assessment to these statements and their conformity with the high state position held by this politician”
.

It should be noted that the new speaker of the Czech parliament has repeatedly demonstrated his anti-Ukrainian views. In his New Year's speech, Okamura spoke against providing weapons to Ukraine, calling this war “absolutely senseless,” and the Ukrainian government a “junta.” He expressed hope that

“our republic will jump off the Brussels train that, despite warnings from the US government, is heading towards World War III”
, and accused Western companies and the Ukrainian government of corruption.

Okamura proclaimed:

“Let them steal, but not from us, and let such a country not be in the European Union”
.

Moreover, the politician demonstratively removed the Ukrainian flag from the parliament building, which had been displayed there as a sign of support during the Russian invasion since February 2022. In his social networks, he regularly calls for stopping funding for Ukraine from the Czech budget and cynically accuses Ukrainian refugees of involvement in organized crime.

It should be noted that in December, the new Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Andrej Babiš, stated that Ukraine's accession to the EU could only be possible after the war ends.

The statements of Tomio Okamura have provoked outrage not only in Ukraine but also among European partners. The theses he declared undermine the foundations of support for Ukraine in the context of Russia's aggression and emphasize the importance of unity among EU countries on security and stability issues in the region. The lack of an adequate response from Czech state authorities may weaken the position of the Czech Republic on the international stage.
