US Proposal to Supply Venezuelan Oil to India Threatens Russia's Key Export Market.
Venezuelan Oil Sales to India Poised for Revival
According to TSN.ua: The United States is proposing a resumption of Venezuelan oil sales to India. This move could displace Russian crude and cause Russia to lose a crucial export market. Since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, India has become a major buyer of Russian oil, but it has pledged to reduce these purchases. This shift highlights India's growing influence as a pivotal player in global oil markets.
India's Planned Reduction of Russian Oil Imports
India is preparing to cut its imports of Russian oil to below one million barrels per day. In January, supplies from Russia stood at approximately 1.2 million barrels per day. Imports are forecast to drop to one million barrels per day in February and further to 800,000 barrels per day in March. Subsequently, volumes are expected to decline to roughly 500,000-600,000 barrels per day.
These changes could significantly impact Russia's energy export revenue, which is projected to fall by 20% by 2025 due to U.S. sanctions. This underscores the potential consequences for the Russian economy amid declining demand for its energy resources.
The revival of Venezuelan oil sales could mark a significant step in shifting global energy dynamics. Reducing India's reliance on Russian crude may open new opportunities for Venezuela's economy, which has faced severe difficulties in recent years. This also points to strategic changes in global energy relationships, which are becoming increasingly important amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
