The administration of US President Donald Trump and Ukraine plan to conclude a long-awaited agreement on natural resources, despite a scandalous meeting in the Oval Office last Friday, during which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was effectively expelled from the building, four sources familiar with the situation reported.

According to three Reuters sources, President Donald Trump informed his advisors that he wants to announce this agreement in his address to Congress on Tuesday evening, although they cautioned that the agreement has not yet been signed and the situation may change.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment. The Ukrainian presidential administration in Kyiv and the Ukrainian embassy in Washington also did not immediately provide comments.

The signing of the agreement was postponed on Friday after a tense meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky, which led to the swift exit of the Ukrainian leader from the White House. Zelensky arrived in Washington specifically to sign this agreement.

During the meeting, Trump and Vice President Jay Di Vance sharply criticized Zelensky, stating that he should be thanking the US for support, rather than asking for additional assistance in front of American media. 'You're playing with the Third World War,' Trump said.

One source reported that American officials communicated with officials in Kyiv regarding the natural resources agreement despite the incident and urged Zelensky's advisors to convince the Ukrainian president to publicly apologize to Trump.

On Tuesday, Zelensky wrote on social media X that Ukraine is ready to sign the agreement, calling the Oval Office meeting 'unfortunate.' 'Our meeting in Washington, at the White House last Friday, did not go as it should have,' Zelensky noted in his post. 'Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace.'

It remains unclear whether the agreement has changed. The contract that was supposed to be signed last week did not contain explicit security guarantees for Ukraine but provided the US with access to revenues from Ukraine's natural resources. It was also anticipated that the Ukrainian government would contribute 50% of any future monetization of state natural resources to an investment reconstruction fund jointly managed by the US and Ukraine.

On Monday, Trump stated that his administration is ready to sign the agreement and emphasized that Ukraine 'should be more grateful.' 'This country has supported them in good times and bad,' Trump noted. 'We have given them much more than Europe, and Europe should have given more than we did.'
