Joint Production of Air Defense Systems

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the United States has, for the first time, given a favorable response to Kyiv’s request for licenses to jointly produce air defense systems and their missiles. This marks a notable shift in Washington’s stance. However, moving forward with the initiative requires approval from U.S. President Donald Trump. Zelenskyy emphasized that

“we need a personal ‘okay’ from Trump now—everyone else is on board.”

Shift in U.S. Licensing Approach

This development comes during the G7 summit held in France. Zelenskyy noted that

“this time, the American team responded positively to the licenses for the first time. Previously, it was always ‘we’ll look into it’ or ‘we don’t know.’”
This reflects a change in the U.S. approach to licensing joint weapons production.

It is worth noting that the U.S. has previously granted similar licenses to Germany, which subsequently launched its own production lines. Ukraine already has a contract with Berlin for the supply of Patriot system missiles. As part of the PURL program, Germany will allocate $400 million for air defense ammunition and Patriot missiles destined for Ukraine.

For Ukraine, securing licenses for joint production is a critical step that could significantly bolster its defensive capabilities. The hope now rests on a positive decision from the U.S. president, which is the key to unlocking this process. This also underscores the deepening military cooperation between Ukraine and the United States—a partnership that carries substantial implications for regional security and stability amid the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces.
