Storm Chandra Reveals 17th-Century Shipwreck, Prompting Urgent Archaeological Rescue.
Rescue Mission for a 17th-Century Shipwreck
According to TSN.ua: Archaeologists on the Dorset coast have launched an urgent operation to save the wooden remains of a 17th-century shipwreck, exposed by Storm Chandra. The revealed structure is believed to belong to the Dutch merchant vessel 'Glory of Horn', which sank in 1631. The storm uncovered the timbers at Knoll Beach, providing a rare, fleeting opportunity for experts to study and recover them. This stretch of the English coast is a known graveyard for historic vessels, making such discoveries both significant and time-sensitive.
Construction Details and Historical Background
The rescue work commenced around 10:00 AM. The exposed section measures approximately 6 meters in length and nearly 2 meters in width. It consists of at least 15 eroded frames and five outer hull planks. While the 'Glory of Horn' met its fate in 1631, historical records indicate that all 45 crew members survived the sinking.
The majority of the 130-foot vessel was first located in the 1990s, with a major excavation following in 2013. The wreck is protected under the 1973 Protection of Wrecks Act, which underscores its national historical and archaeological importance. The current efforts represent the latest chapter in the ongoing study and preservation of this significant maritime artifact.
Recovering these timbers is a crucial step in understanding the region's maritime history and could yield new insights into 17th-century trade networks. Such archaeological work is vital for preserving cultural heritage and public understanding of our seafaring past. A successful rescue here could set a valuable precedent for future marine archaeology projects elsewhere.
