The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord is one of the oldest Christian holidays, celebrated on the 40th day after Christmas. According to legend, the Virgin Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the Jerusalem temple to offer a sacrifice to God for their firstborn. There they were met by Simeon, who was promised by an angel to live until he saw the Savior. He recognized the Messiah in Jesus. Simeon is considered a witness to the divine origin of Christ.

In 2023, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Churches switched to the New Julian calendar, thus church celebrations shifted back by 13 days. Therefore, non-movable Orthodox holidays now coincide with Catholic ones.
