Supermarkets Slash Prices in Half on Key Items.
Supermarket Discounts and Their Impact on Shoppers
According to Novyny.live: Major Ukrainian supermarket chains have launched significant sales events, drawing considerable attention from cost-conscious consumers. These promotions offer a practical way for shoppers to save money on their grocery bills. Specifically, ATB and Silpo stores have conducted price analyses, revealing substantial markdowns on a range of popular goods.
According to the data, prices dropped on February 5, 2023, for the following items:
- Cream cheese, now 119 UAH instead of 239 UAH;
- A box of milk chocolate, now priced at 94.90 UAH, down from 179.90 UAH;
- Marshmallows (zefir), selling for 49.99 UAH, previously 93.49 UAH.
Prices for other products like coffee, dumplings, sausages, varenyky (filled dumplings), red bell peppers, and pears may also see reductions. This makes shopping at these supermarkets increasingly attractive for budget-minded customers.
The Enduring Appeal of Traditional Markets
Despite these supermarket promotions, many Ukrainians continue to prefer traditional markets for their food shopping. This preference is driven by competitive pricing, product freshness, and shorter supply chains. Markets typically offer seasonal vegetables, fruits, greens, honey, and farm eggs, which are key advantages for many buyers. However, as noted by Liliia Bystrytska:
“It's important to remember that frost can affect the quality of products sold at open-air markets.”
Interestingly, in early February 2026, ATB supermarkets saw a 50% price increase on eggs sold individually. This highlights how product prices can fluctuate due to seasonality and other market factors. While supermarket discounts on popular items certainly boost consumer demand, it remains crucial to consider all aspects when deciding where to shop. Navigating grocery choices is a key part of household budgeting in Ukraine's current economic climate.
Amid economic instability and inflation, supermarket sales can be a vital tool for consumers aiming to reduce their everyday expenses. Simultaneously, markets retain their popularity by offering fresh, quality products at competitive prices. Shoppers are advised to weigh various factors, including cost, quality, and convenience, when selecting their preferred shopping venue.
