Taiwan accuses China of damaging undersea cable

An undersea internet cable near Taiwan's northern coast has been damaged, leading to a temporary communication blackout.

Taiwan has asked South Korea to detain a vessel that may have caused the cable damage. The cable is part of a system that facilitates communication between Taiwan and the United States.

The vessel is owned by Jie Yang Trading Limited, registered in Hong Kong. Taiwan suspects that this incident may be part of China's strategy to disrupt Taiwan's external communications.

Taiwan's Coast Guard stated that satellite data and information from the Automatic Identification System indicate that the vessel was anchoring in the area where the cable was damaged. However, due to adverse weather, Taiwan officials were unable to board the vessel, and the window to detain it has already passed.

“We have requested South Korea's assistance in the investigation when the vessel arrives at Busan port”

Taiwanese officials believe that this incident aligns with a global trend of sabotaging underwater infrastructure. The vessel Shunxing39 is in poor technical condition and resembles a ship from the Russian 'shadow fleet'.

It is worth noting that an electrical cable between Estonia and Finland was also damaged in the Baltic Sea. Finland detained the oil tanker Eagle S, which had sailed from St. Petersburg, on suspicion of damaging the cable.

Finland is also continuing its investigation related to this incident and the damage to other cables in the Baltic Sea.

NATO members agreed on measures to increase the Alliance's presence in the Baltic Sea following these cable damages connecting Estonia and Finland.
